I wanted to come up with a clever April Fools joke, but I’m not quite caffeinated enough.
As you know, during the Pandemic shutdown, I added slip casting to my bag of tricks. It’s messy and space consuming, so I needed the break to figure it out, and currently I only do it during studio teaching breaks when I can spread out. I had originally grabbed the baby heads off of eBay to experiment with pouring molds and to see how good ones were constructed. We’re also in stone’s throw of the Brimfield Flea Market, and at the time, weird baby head art was in vogue. So why not?
The pandemic lasted a while, and so I bought more antique molds and had some fun combining them before I had to beat everything back onto shelving to make room for normal studio operation. However… during my travels online, I ran across a mold that looked really fun, but wasn’t available. Since then, every few months or so, I hit the used markets to try to find this mold. So far I’ve had no luck, BUT… because algorithms are what they are, they keep popping cool other molds into my searches. As a result, I’ve grabbed some very unique things!
I feel the need to periodically point out that I really love beautiful things! The quirky ones are just some extra candy to toss in on top. Along with the body parts, I’m also pouring some elegant mugs and wine goblets using the swirly marbled slip. I found an exceptional mold maker (in Croatia, of all places. The US really isn’t into slip casting as much as other continents, I’ve found.) and have some more being shipped now. And how about those antique butterfly soap dishes?
More to come!
